Capitalization is to transform an experience into knowledge knowledge to be able to share and put at the service of action and knowledge. It is also the process through which an experience is identified, validated and documented, leading to learning and identification of good practices which can then be adapted, improved, adopted by others and up-scaled leading to a greater impact.
Before capitalization of an experience it is good to ask yourself these questions;
- Why capitalize? (context, objectives, expectations, issues)
- For who? (internal actors, other actors, beneficiaries)
- On what? (successes, good practices, failures, life or development, stories, strategies, methods)
- Where find the information? (reports, other documents, databases, actors, beneficiaries, other witnesses)
- Who can or should capitalize? (Internal, external or mixed resources, leading actors.
- When to capitalize? (time, duration, rhythm and periodicity)
- How to do it? (establish consistent terms of reference, choose relevant methods, tools, products, training, …)
- How to finance the process? (How to value the time and the means used?)
In terms of climate change adaptation, there a lot of practices by our communities using Indigenous knowledge to adapt to climate change effects. It is our responsibility therefore to capitalize these experiences for upscaling and adoption purposes.
